Hrm, I've reproduced the issue, so I know what you're talking about. The status parsing code is pretty ugly as is. My guess is that PyYIMt is actually sending the wrong data to the yahoo network, but I'm not sure what it should be sending. If I get some time I'll try and have a look at what Gaim/Pigdin/libpurple does, and match that logic.
