I did follow the local installation procedure. Even if I redo it:

vimdir=$HOME/.vim python setup.py install --force --home=$HOME

I still have to have the PYTHONPATH variable, else I get the error above.
Perhaps I made some mistake somewhere earlier on. Anyways, it is working
nicely now (with PYTHONPATH).

I also installed it on a Fedora 8 system and, there it did not have this
problem.
