thanks for the fast response!
after removing all previous setup tools via
sudo rm -Rf /Library/Python/2.6/site-packages/setup*
and downloading http://pypi.python.org/pypi/distribute version 0.6.10
and installing
sudo python distribute_setup.py
the pycuda sudo make install finishes without crash.
But I can't open the champagne yet, when trying to execute the test

I'm not sure, but this could partly be a result of the
setuptools/distribute disaster. See
http://wiki.tiker.net/DistributeVsSetuptools
and try to use distribute instead of setuptools.
