You see, now why didn't I think of this? D'oh!
From what people have said so far, I'm tempted to go with Fred's
solution as the default option, but with some optional keywords that
allows the user to change or eliminate the default timeout if they know
they have their hardware set up correctly.
This seems reasonable to me, but I'd still be interested in other
options if anyone has any more ideas.
