Most of the time this kind of error goes away by rebooting ...
it it fails on shoud investigate:

For the kernel version:
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version
NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 304.88 Wed Mar 27 14:26:46 PDT
2013
GCC version: gcc version 4.6.3 (Debian 4.6.3-14)

what we are interested in is 304.88

For the cuda version, please type:
dpkg -l |grep libcuda1
ii libcuda1:amd64 304.88-1
      amd64 NVIDIA CUDA runtime library

in my case they match (great!)

If cuda was not installed by your system management, this probably means 2
installation are co-habiting (not correctly)

Hope this helps
