As I download Eclipse 3.3, I'm kind of disappointed that one of my options is not "Eclipse IDE for Python Developers". Of course, I am already aware of PyDev, and know where to find it. Most visitors to eclipse.org are not aware of PyDev. PyDev is such a joy to work with, Python is such a great language, it is a shame that more people are not made aware of the possibility of using Eclipse for Python development. It seems that the level of community involvement in PyDev is a fraction of what could be available if PyDev were available directly from the eclipse.org website, and if PyDev were easily discoverable via the built-in eclipse discovery site. Today, if you google for Python IDE, you are faced with a few poor and outdated blog postings, plus specific results for many other IDEs, with PyDev coming in very low on the first page. If I were looking for a Python IDE today, I don't think PyDev would be one that I would even try, based on these search results. The availability of a robust, modern, free, full featured IDE is critical to the continued adoption of Python. PyDev provides this. Those who may use Eclipse for other projects might not ever even see PyDev as an option, since searching for Python on eclipse.org gives a bunch of cryptic results none of which indicate that PyDev even exists. So, in the interest of PyDev flourishing long into the future, and in the interest of expanding the community around PyDev, it seems to me that making PyDev a first class eclipse project could only benefit everyone. Perhaps there are reasons for not doing this, but in the long run, it seems that eclipse plugins that are not on eclipse.org will remain obscure and underutilized.
