I prefer to use Debian packages wherever feasible. Custom installations *are* hard, in the long run, since they will become outdated and unmaintained over the years, unless some really dedicated contributor cares about them. My biggest concern are security flaws here: for Debian packages, I trust that the debian maintainers track them, and provide updates for all "active" debian releases. For our own clone, somebody would have to run updates manually, as well as merge fixes manually.
