My take-away:
There is no PEP8 for version numbers.
Versioning needs to be simple and flexible.
Reasonable people can disagree on how to do it.
Python doesn't include a standard for WRITING versions numbers but it
does provide a "standard" for COMPARING them.

Thank you python and thank you Richard for pointing out the existence
of that little gem of a package.
