Thanks for all the advice. After some investigation on two different
machines it turns out that the system where I was experiencing this
behavior had an old pyglet 1.1alpha2 egg file laying around, which was
being loaded instead of the 1.1.2 release I recently installed. After
deleting it and reinstalling 1.1.2 the performance degradation became
temporary, as Alex described. It used to be permanent, which is what
caused my initial concern.
