This is not meant as a flippant reply, but I think you may have an
opportunity here to contribute if you so choose. Sounds like an itch
that needs scratching to me.

When you say some thing like "I think someone should really look into
it" on an open source project's mailing list, and nobody else has for
some time already, you are highly unlikely to provoke action. I would
suggest at a minimum, if you desire a remedy, to determine the
probable root cause, possible solutions, and preferably come up with a
patch, even if it is just a hack that is not necessarily suitable as a
general solution.

Of course that's all voluntary, but it might get the results you want.
