Oh, I'm aware that ffmpeg isn't dead.  I did some extensive reading
and investigation before I came to the decision to switch.  If
switching to libav proves more difficult than switching to an
up-to-date ffmpeg (which I doubt), I won't have any qualms about
altering the decision.
