I wrote some code for dhewm3 to do this once (query amount of memory in general). It is NOT fun, there is no cross vendor way to do so. There however, are methods to do so for nvidia and ati on their binary drivers. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4552372/determining-available-video-memory discusses some of the available methods.
