My apologies for accidentally posting this question twice. I missed the 
note about it being a moderated forum and posts requiring approval.

The problem was in my language settings, which I somehow mangled. I needed 
to edit, as root, my /etc/locale.conf and change the incorrect en_US_UTF.8 
to en_US_UTF-8 (note hyphen and dot before the 8). After rebooting, all is 
fixed.
