On the audio side, SDL_Mixer supports wave, aiff, voc and ogg vorbis natively. Flac, mp3 and others require additional libraries. I think this is a reasonable strategy.
If I'm going to dream, I would love to see a built-in Vorbis decoder in pure python. It would probably not be possible to do any real-time playback, but it could convert to wave internally when files are loaded in.
