Thanks, Alex, that clarifies the problem tremendously.  It would be  
much easier to give you a true iterator access to the NLMSASlice  
results (than it would have been to hold open the disk-access  
iterators).  For match_intervals it's pretty trivial.  By the way, you  
can just take the len() of an NLMSASlice, I think this returns the  
number of aligned sequences.
