Made it work but took a bit. I don't find anything but the full
install on the postgresql web site. What am I overlooking to get a

Yes, you can customize the parts you want installed with the installer.
I don't want the server installed on workstations, but have several
python programs in use with more coming. This will require pygresql
and the dlls on the workstations, don't really want much more visible
to the users. Server is running 8.1 something on linux, will do an
update to the current ubuntu version next week.
Use the installer on one workstation for a minimal installation with
libpq.dll, then you can copy the PostgreSQL bin folder libpq.dll to the
other workstations. The libpq.dll depends on some other libraries, e.g.
for SSL. Best use a PostgreSQL version that is not older than the one on
your server.
