This problem is not just related to pygtk -- it also affects mozilla,
gnome-perl and any other program where libgtk is dynamically loaded
without the RTLD_GLOBAL flag.

I checked in a fix to the gtk-engines module on CVS a few months ago, but
there hasn't been a new release.

Currently, the best fix is to use the CVS version of gtk-engines. The
slightly out of date tarballs at ftp.jimpick.com should do fine.
