In this case, you might consider:

- a popup menu with two items to show the preview in one of the
zoomed views
- Click and Shift-Click to put a preview to one of the views.
But this usually asks for a undo in case the user kills the wrong
picture.
- Put the pictures in a vertical row between the two zoomed views
and add arrows to both sides pointing to the zoomed view. Like
this: ZV1 [<] Preview [>] ZV2

The last is probably the most intuitive metaphor.
