This is a known problem.  See the following bugzilla bug:
  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50707

A future version of gtk+ won't have the problem (hopefully before gtk+ 2.0
is released :), but for now you either need to patch python or patch the
pango and gtk+ builds, as mentioned in the bug ticket.
