I often do that in my app (though I usually do that with label). The only way I have found to make this work is setting a fixed size for the container widget that holds the hiding component. You can do that in Glade by using the third tab (Common), or in pure PyGTK (ooh) by calling GtkWidget.set_usize(width, height) If there's a better solution I'd sure like to hear it.
