The gtkmm tutorial has a page that describes these widgets a bit:

IIRC, you can check if a widget has its own window by looking at its
associated GdkWindow -- if it's one of these windowless widgets, it will
share its parent GdkWindow.

Not sure about that; if it does have its own X window, then it should be
