Ross,
Works for me on Fedora 2
numarray 0.9.1
pygtk 2.3.93 updated from cvs
gtk+  2.4.0
python 2.3.3

Have you verified numarray passes its own tests?
        $ python
        >>> import numarray.testall as testall
        >>> testall.test()

I had a problem with numarray failing its tests with a Floating point
exception.
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=870660&group_id=1369&atid=450446

It turned out to be a bug in glibc which has been fixed in version 2.3.3
