I also checked the code before posting here, and everything looks sane. But can you get the correct icon (or anything besides None, for that matter) using gnome-python 2.6.1?

  You should try the new wrapped function gnome.ui.icon_lookup, in
gnome-python 2.9.1.

Will definitely do, thanks! However, it'll be a while until mainstream distros ship 2.9.1 so that the code we write could be actually used :-)
