I've looked at the Layout widget ... but I'm not nearly versed enough in pygtk yet , so I dont know if thats the way to go.

It sounds like Layout is just what you want. You get
complete control over the positioning of its child
widgets, you can scroll it, and you can draw in it.

And what are sockets and plugs about?

I'm not too sure, but I don't think you need them
for this.
