I think I've narrowed the problem down considerably, and I've just
submitted a ticket for it -- it's awaiting Giovanni's moderation. (It
seems to have to do with the loader's way of setting up the environment
for the child process.)

Could you just look at code difference between these two branches?
It could be any code but probably something with resolving dependencies
of python modules.
