Again, thanks, Bryan.  In our environment, all stderr and stdout goes to logs, so as this is recipe is written, we'd need to use communicate() to pull it from the pipe to the file handles.  I think that since our requirement is unconditional, I will simply pass the file handles to the method and have them assigned instead of piping and communicating.
