Yes, it would be nice for "corporations" to better society rather than be leaches. A typical response is: "we provide jobs and we pay 50% in taxes". Of course, the high tax rate for corporations in the United States is irrelevant due to massive tax breaks and multinational corporations that are accountable to no one. It might not be known outside of the United States, but many corporations basically blackmail governments: give us tax breaks or we take our jobs elsewhere. Therefore, their handling of FOSS is not surprising to me. The whole mentality of keep buying nice shiny rubbish/baubles because it keeps our economy afloat makes me nauseous. The part that is difficult to explain to people is the advantages of being a graduate student and postdoc make the idea that I am paid less than my siblings and have fewer baubles mostly a nonissue (for me). --Jeff
