 someone i know did a brief analysis, he said that if you require less
than 6 servers, get a leased virtual instance xN (e.g.
xtrahost.co.uk).  if it's around 6 servers, get your own machine and
co-lo it.  above that, it turns out to be much cheaper to rent amazon
EC2 instances.

 ... but most people don't do that kind of analysis :)
