I understand your point. However, it is easy for me to confuse myself. For example how can some people be adamant about open source, but then proceed to use VPS without qualms? Or another item is wanting to use only software libre to build their own software as a service tool? It appears to be positioning or "drawing lines in the sand" and about different peoples comfort levels rather than any real set of heuristics/rules/guidelines to follow. On the other hand, maybe using a VPS is not giving up any freedoms? I don't really know. It might just be me, but if some developers have issues trying to sort out the mess, how should the general public know which types of services are reasonable and which step over the line?
