My first recommendation is to see if a machine on which you had already installed it *and it was working* still shows it working -- automatic updates to Windows XP itself have been known to break things. If older installs are working, the next thing to look at is whether the newer ones which don't are on the same Service Pack of WinXP; SP3 is the final one, after which there were only security updates (and those are about to stop), but lots of stuff changes from SP2 to SP3, and that could be a problem.
