I couldn't stand and I had to download the KDE3.1 rpms for SuSE 8.1 along with Qt 3.1.1. Same old story: just export KDE_MALLOC="n" and everything works fine.
(please imagine very loud cry coming from a tortured soul)
Maybe soon enough fixes from SuSE will be available.
