If you do want SQL storage, Myghty sessions apparently support memcached as a backend as well. There may also be a way to use some of the underlying Myghty container APIs to perhaps just count keys to get an idea of how many active sessions there are. Best place to ask about either would probably be on the Myghty mailing list.
