Welcome to being "a stupid American".  I'm one too.  This stuff took
me a lot of work to learn.  I've been in charge of i18n at two
different companies, but there's no end to the number of ways that
this stuff can cause you pain.

The Tower of Babel?  Yeah, we got screwed!
