Side question: is it easy to tell from the version numbers when reindexing is required?
I think (?) Lucene offers backwards compatibility for one major release back. With Lucene 9 you can read down to Lucene 8 indexes, for example. Lucene 10 is about to get released and supports down to Lucene 9. To be sure, you should confirm this with the Lucene user list. PyLucene has the same compatibility support, it's the same underlying code and it uses the same version numbers too.
