they tune memory usage by increasing TermInfosWriter.indexInterval.
Can we do this in PyLucene?

Sort of. TermInfosWriter is not a public class and it is not documented. I can certainly make it accessible in PyLucene but there is no API that I could find on the classes that use this class that make its instances available for tuning.

I suspect that gcj has some kind of memory limitation...

In order to verify that this problem is specific to gcj, you can try to open the same 51 Gb index with Java Lucene, the index is supposed to be usable both by Java Lucene and PyLucene.
