Not too hard. You'd have to remove the 'unreleased' jar from the build and make sure that the APIs introduced since 1.4.3 are exposed. I suspect the analyzer packages have also changed so you'd have to change all that too.
Then, there is always the odd bug that may need some patching...

Anyway, as with any Java Lucene release, I expect to update PyLucene to use the 1.9 code shortly after it's released.
