I'm afraid not as in one case a unicode character is 2 bytes wide and in the
other, 4. It seems to be a difference in configuration when python itself is
compiled and varies across Linux distributions. Why there are such multiple
choices, I don't know.
In general, caution is recommended when using binaries built on different
Linux distributions.
