PS, you still don't recommend gcc 4.1 for anything, right? I'm trying to build c++ and python versions of my program to see how the speed compares, but PyLucene from the subversion trunk compiled under my old 4.1 snapshot makes python crash. If you still recommend against using the 4 series, I won't spend too much time trying to debug things.

I've tried gcj 4.1.0 on PPC Mac OS X (as built via darwinports) and it worked fine. There is no functional gcj at all for Intel Mac OS X at the moment. GCJ 4.2.0 patches for supporting Intel Mac OS X have been submitted but the resulting gcj 4.2.0 isn't quite there yet...

I've tried gcj 4.1.0 on gentoo Linux and without a patch, it doesn't work there. With this patch, http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/java/2006-03/msg00190.html, it works fine.

As for windows, I know of no functional gcj 4.x. If you embark on making one for Windows, make sure you let the [EMAIL PROTECTED] list know.

Do I recommend using gcj 4.1 at this time ? No, not really. But, given that it works in some cases, if your constraints happen to fit those, gaining some experience with it would be great. There are a few bugs that got fixed between 3.4.x and 4.x that affect PyLucene, most notably the 2GB file size limitation which can be hit when creating large FSDirectory indexes.

If you decide to use gcj 4.1, please share your experiences with the list.
Thanks !

Andi..
