IIRC, that's the way we do it.

Basically, we have a little wrapper that does the forking of a child.  You 
pass it a function to call in the child.  Said function does all of the 
imports, etc..

Sorry, it's not open source, but there are similar things in the cookbook.  
www.humanized.com may have one as well.
