No. You can't use the source tarball at all with gcj 4.x, you have to start from an svn checkout and make sure you have a sane JDK to first compile the Lucene java sources that the PyLucene build process will export from the Lucene svn repository.

You then need to create a wrapper for JvAttachCurrentThread()
and call it from your python code.

No, SWIG is not used anymore since PyLucene 2.0.
