Just a quick note to let you all know that building PyLucene on Ubuntu Linux
Feisty Fawn 7.04 (32 bit) using the default gcj 4.1.2 as installed with their
package manager produced a sane PyLucene. This is the first time I was able
to build a sane PyLucene with an out-of-the-box gcj on Linux !
I'm sorry to report that I spoke too fast. The usual random
NullPointerException happens when - apparently - GC gets involved. It was just
random enough to not kick in when I ran the tests in the build I first did.
PyLucene built from stock gcj 4.1.2 on Ubuntu 7.04 doesn't pass tests when
used with Chandler. Oh well.
I'm now building the latest gcj 4.2.0 pre-release (dated 20070501)...
Andi..
I still have to select Sun's JDK javac as the front-end compiler, this is
what's done with the 'update-java-alternatives' command below.
Here are the steps I followed once I had the Live CD installed:
- sudo apt-get install subversion
- svn co http://svn.osafoundation.org/pylucene/trunk PyLucene
- sudo apt-get install ant
- sudo apt-get install sun-java5-jdk
- sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-1.5.0-sun
- sudo apt-get install g++
- sudo apt-get install gcj
- sudo apt-get install python-dev
- edit PyLucene's Makefile to include:
# Linux (with gcc 4.1.2 and libgcj dynamically linked)
PREFIX=/usr
PREFIX_PYTHON=$(PREFIX)
LIBDIR_NAME=lib
GCJ_HOME=/usr
GCJ_LIBDIR=$(GCJ_HOME)/$(LIBDIR_NAME)
GCJ_STATIC=0
#LIB_INSTALL=libstdc++.so.7 libgcc_s.so.1
#DB=$(PYLUCENE)/db-$(DB_VER)
#PREFIX_DB=$(PREFIX)/BerkeleyDB.$(DB_LIB_VER)
ANT=ant
PYTHON=$(PREFIX_PYTHON)/bin/python
- cd /usr/lib
- sudo ln -s libstdc++.so.6.0.8 libstdc++.so.6
- cd ~/PyLucene
- make
- sudo make install
- make test
all tests passed
