I've actually decided to go a different way. I see that your Solaris binary is just a tgz file containing the "lucene" extension; I'm copying that, instead. I'll just unpack that tgz file in /Library/Python/2.3/site-packages/, which should do the trick. Or 2.3, on Tiger.
