Hi,

Go Jeff! /me pats Jeff on the pack.

I think a getLength() call is impossible for some file types. Like
mp3. Have a look in the header of the files you are to play.
Otherwise calculate a guess with the formula given.

If you don't like pymedia or how it is developed or supported feel
free to use something else. You might find comercial software with
paid support to be more to your liking. Fmod is a commercial sound
playing software with python bindings.

Dmitry is doing this for his own uses, and for fun. He doesn't
represent that pymedia will be bug free, or that he will help you with
any problem you have.

He's written some software and then said...
"""Hey everyone! I have made this pymedia thing for my car player...
if you want to use it feel free! It might be useful for you, but it
might also blow up! Just because I am a nice guy I have also written
all of these tutorials, examples, and documentation to make it easier
for you. Oh, also here is a mailing list so you can chat about the
software and I will even help you out free of charge if I have the
time. Not only have I set up a mailing list for you, I've also set up
a forum, and written a FAQ document which answers lots of common
questions. I make my work in progress available in the CVS code
repository which keeps track of every change I make so you too can see
what is changed between versions. Every now and then I will package
together a binary, and source tar ball as a release for those who
don't want to keep track of every little change I make, or who can not
compile the software themselves.'"""

Not everyone working on free software has the time to fix lots of
problems. Especially in the early stages of a project which will
still have lots of problems(first 1-5 years), compared to a 5-10-15
year old project.

The great thing about free software is that you get to have all that
other work done for you. If you just need a few functions fixed up
then you'll probably be ok with pymedia. If a few other people fix up
a couple of functions too... then eventually you get much more
polished software. If the author is not responding to you, you can
always dig in there and fix the problem yourself. If you're not going
to put in the effort to fix a bug you need fixed, then why would
someone else do it for you?

Pymedia isn't at that mature project stage yet. However it is slowly
getting better, and is more advanced than lots of other projects. I
think at some point soon it will reach that stage where it is working
well enough, and has enough users + developers in order to get to that
mature stage.

Have fun!
