PyMOL Users,

At last! The non-beta PyMOL 0.98 release.

http://delsci.com/rel/0_98

Non-sponsors, please note the new terms attached to our PyMOL Executable
Builds as shown at startup on the updated "splash" screen. To summarize:

As always, PyMOL remains unrestricted open-source software. However, from
version 0.98 onward, if you wish to use PyMOL for free without sponsoring
the effort, then you will need to begin assuming responsibility for building
and/or maintaining your own executable builds from the open-source code.

For the time being however, compliance with this remains voluntary, and we
leave you in control of your "finite honor-system" evaluation of our Builds.
The only thing that has really changed is that we now "expect" rather than
"ask" those who depend upon our builds to eventually engage in a two-way
exchange of value. It basically just boils down to motivating sponsorship
with convenience.

So from now on, please don't use our builds beyond a reasonable evaluation
if you are not at all willing to consider becoming a sponsor. But if you
are willing to do so, then feel free to take whatever time you need
evaluating PyMOL to make sure it can thorougly meet your needs.

Why the change? Because we believe it is a necessary step for PyMOL if it
is to reach its full potential through sponsored development in reasonable
time. We are now at a point with PyMOL & DeLano Scientific where is it
abundantly clear how increased revenue can and will translate into faster
progress in key areas, mainly through involvement of additional people. How
exciting! But for this to work, we need to focus in on and reinforce the
value cycles that can and do exist surrounding PyMOL.

Anyway, please enjoy the new release. It has all of the new stuff from the
past 35 beta releases, including our personal favorites: Animated scene
transitions and PyMOL "show" files.

Cheers,
Warren & Joni

PS. Classroom, educational, and public use is of course exempt from this new
sponsorship expectation, as was the case with MacPyMOL.
