Carsten, Thanks! That was the problem. Not so easy to change the permissions on /dev/nvidia0 and /dev/nvidiactl (Suse keeps resetting the permissions on user change). I had to change the /etc/logindevperm settings (uncheck the /dev/nvidia line) and than it worked! Best, Joris

Check if the /dev entry for your video card has the right permissions. For the nvidia board I observed that sometimes the entries (/dev/nvidia0 and/or /dev/nvidiactl) are crw------ instead of crw-rw-rw.
