PyMOL may somehow be importing a conflicting .py or .so. 

Is "." in your path? It may be in PyMOL's default sys.path...hmm...

Also note that 

> ${PYMOL_PATH}/__init__.py $*

is better as

> ${PYMOL_PATH}/__init__.py "$@"
