Volume rendering came out in v1.4 of PyMOL. So, you should be set.

The use of volume rendering for visualizing electron density, cryo-EM,
and electrostatics has yet to hit its maturity. It's more flexible and
beautiful than iso-contours -- and in fact can degenerate into
iso-contours if you want. So you get your old representations
(isomesh/isosurface) but you also get to visualize one or more ranges
of data colored exactly as you want. And, coming soon, we'll be able
to assign different density values to different scenes so that you can
animate the transitions in movies. We are also planning on improving
the PyMOL UI to make volumes easier to use.

Cheers,
