Obviously CFFI doesn't store random stuff in the high bit. It's meant to work on Linux to start with, so the idea never even crossed my mind. The reason CFFI was mentioned in this thread is that by using it you can call arbitrary DLLs, some of which may have the historical problem --- i.e. assume that all pointers are in the positive half.
