Although implementation_version looks promising, it is defined as
"sys.implementation.version" which is an alias to the python version.
"implementation" is also not helpful.

does pypy even have a sys.implementation? (My installation doesn't?)

For now, I'm simply breaking the build environment, which forces a fallback
to setup.py install. At least this will work until pip 21 is out, although
rumor has it that pip 21 may not break that just yet.
