Thanks Horst and Phil. It's become a trade-off between time and functionality.
For now, I've just instructed my application to stick a temporary link to itself in the "~/.kde/Autostart/" directory. This will be okay since I don't need to store any session-specific info: I only need the application to restart with KDE. When I require more functionality, I'll revisit this thread and have a go at implementing the helpful suggestions made by Phil, Andreas and Horst.
